Facts you should know on contact lens use
News Canada

(NC)—"Mom, can I get contact lenses?"

It's a question every parent of a glasses-wearing teen is likely to hear, sooner or later – then probably again and again! Whether you're a parent supervising a new user or wear them yourself, here are tips on wearing contacts successfully from Advanced Medical Optics, maker of lens care solution Complete® Moisture Plus™.

• Don't sleep with contacts in. If you do, rinse with saline solution before attempting to remove them, otherwise it might hurt!

• Wash hands before handling lenses, taking special care if household cleaners or chemicals were used beforehand. To insert contacts easily, gently pull down the lower lid of the eye and look up.

• Did you know that lens care solutions play a critical role in contact lens comfort? Look for new lubricating formulas with ingredients such as taurine that help ensure greater comfort and longer hours of wear.

• Lens care solution should be changed every day, and the lens case washed periodically with mild soap and rinsed thoroughly with solution before use.

• Makeup products that come into contact with the eye – particularly mascara – should be replaced frequently, about every three months, to prevent infections.

• Don't wear contacts in swimming pools. Besides the chance they could float away, this water typically has bacteria and chemicals that can cause problems once behind your lenses.

• Forgetful? Cut down searches by always putting the lens case in the same place when contacts are not in use. And don't forget your yearly checkup by an eye care professional – it's of special importance for wearers of glasses and contact lenses.
